Answers to your LASIK questions
Is the laser treatment painful?
NO! One of the beautiful things about LASIK is that the
procedure itself is painless, no injections are given and
you can usually return to work the next day without pain.
At times, eyes can be red or irritable but this is a short
temporary problem and normally goes away in one or two
days.

How well will I see after surgery?
Most patients see well enough that they drive themselves
to our office the next day. How well you will see will
depend on your prescription. People that are not very
nearsighted usually recover more quickly than people who
are highly nearsighted. Remember, everyone heals
differently, and while most people are near 20/20 the next
morning, some of the higher prescriptions may take more
time to stabilize. Most patients are able to drive
themselves in the next day to a quick post-op visit, and
then to work. It is rare to be unable to resume normal
activities soon after surgery.

What are the risks of LASIK?
All surgeries have some risk involved. Very few patients
develop complications. After a thorough pre-operative eye
exam, the surgeon will discuss any risks that may apply to
you.

Can I dispose of glasses and contacts forever?
Most likely! The vast majority of our patients don't
need glasses or contacts following surgery. However, when
people reach early to mid 40s, they will still need
reading glasses. This is the natural aging process of the
eye which cannot be corrected by LASIK.

Can anyone have LASIK?
Patients must be at least 18 and their prescription
should have been stable for at least a year prior to LASIK.
Most people stabilize in their late teens or early 20s.
There are a few medical conditions which could exclude a
patient from having surgery. Before having LASIK, all
patients are examined by the surgeon to make sure they are
a good candidate for vision correction.

Can both eyes be operated on at the same time?
Nearly all patients have both eyes corrected at the same
time. However, there are no additional fees if a patient
chooses to have each eye corrected on different days. Most
of our patients feel very comfortable and prefer the
convenience of having both eyes corrected at the same
time.

Does my medical insurance pay for LASIK?
Probably not! At this time, most insurance companies
consider LASIK surgery as a cosmetic surgical procedure.
There are a few employers who have put special riders on
their company's insurance policy to cover this procedure.
Our staff will be glad to investigate if your insurance
policy will cover LASIK.
We have
different financing companies that offer affordable
monthly payments.

Are the results of LASIK surgery permanent?
YES! Once your vision has been fully corrected the
results are permanent. It is still possible to develop
other medical conditions as you age that would change your
vision.

How do I keep from blinking during LASIK?
We use an instrument called a lid speculum which gently
holds the eyelids open. Once the eye is anesthetized the
lid speculum is painlessly placed under both the upper and
lower eye lids and prevents the eye from blinking during
the surgery.

Can LASIK correct astigmatism and farsightedness?
YES!

What if I can't see as well as I want after surgery?
Laser surgery is extremely accurate and there are only a
few cases where a patient has a remaining prescription; this is called undercorrection. In
these few cases, an additional laser procedure can be
performed to correct the remaining prescription. There is
no additional charge if any additional correction is
required.

How long does the LASIK procedure take?
The actual procedure generally lasts less than 10
minutes for both eyes.

Will LASIK cause my eyes to become dry?
Your eyes may become a little dry immediately following
surgery. This should go away within a couple of days. But
in some cases symptoms of dryness may last longer.
